I have no regular brand to buy, just whatever catches my fancy. However this thread has reminded me of my desire to one day try a bar of Ogleby Sisters Soap.

Growing up my parents only bought Ivory.

I tried to switch to body wash when I had issues with soap scum as well, however I do not like using it as much as just a bar of soap. I had a simple fix for the soap scum---my bar of soap sits in a soap dish that has some depth in the shower and thus it does let any soapy water drain down the side of the tiles. Any excess water that gets in gets tossed.

I usually buy Irish Spring.

Cetaphil for the face.

I follow the skincare advice of Paula Begoun, who calls herself The Cosmetics Cop, and writes books and runs a website on the subject. The Cosmetics Cop: Paula's Choice Skincare & Cosmetics

She recommends liquid soap and my allergies are not compatible with floral scents. So right now I use Trader Joe's "Refresh" brand liquid shower gel. It's cost effective, kind to sensitive skin (I live in very dry Arizona), and has a light citrus scent which is appropriate for women or men.

Ivory Body Wash. It's $0.97/bottle at Walmart and oddly enough, I like it a lot more than the expensive stuff. It doesn't have an overwhelming Grandma smell, lathers nicely, and cleans quickly. My wife bought me this moisturizing Dove body wash when I ran out last week and it was so thick it felt like lotion. It didn't lather at all, and it smelled like patchouli perfume I quickly replaced it with another bottle of Ivory.

Body - unscented white Dove bar soap and sometimes African black soap.

Face - African black soap

I switch soaps from time to time. I always keep Lever 2000 on hand--DH has always preferred old school Safeguard, but it's getting hard to find. I also like the scented soaps I get at World Market & TJMaxx.

I think that soap's becoming a generational thing. I know my 30ish offspring started preferring body washes when they were teens, and I think they still use those on themselves and that's what their kids use as well.

I'm in my thirties, and I would estimate that body wash is the default in my demographic, it really took off when we were teens (some stores that were instrumental/pretty much built around the liquid body wash industry, like Bath and Body Works, started in the 1990s and we're heavily marketed). I, however, have gone back to bar soap.

I've gone through a lot of different bar soaps, including expensive fancy ones and handmade "artisanal" soaps. I keep coming back to Yardley English Lavender and Yardley Oatmeal, and Dove. Ivory with Aloe is good, too. Yardley makes a Sandalwood which I have on my Amazon wish list to try. For body washes, I've tried a number of them and favor the Nivea for Men Sensitive body wash, or the Old Spice Original fragrance body wash. A lot of the "for men" products are scented with cheap-@ss musk and synthetic sandalwood -- I suppose the Axe generation goes for that sort of thing.

Frankly, I think the expensive imported and artisanal soaps are overrated.
