I've definitely noticed thinner fabric clothing too in the last several plus yrs. Nordstrom, for example, is known for high quality & being pricey, but even they have thinner clothing.
It's the old saying they say about how "things just aren't made the way they used to be".
By the way, that's a book I wouldn't mind reading...seems interesting.
I buy yoga pants from Old Navy. I have a pair that I bought a few years ago. Then I bought some more this year in the exact same style. You can really feel the difference in the weight of the fabric between the two.
I believe the desire for cheap clothing by the masses is what has created this trend (linked to many other factors in the economy such as stagnant wages for the past few decades, etc). The retailers will supply what the masses will buy.
OP, jade408, can you tell us more about this book, "Overdressed?"
Was the book more about the fashion industry or -- environmental damage caused by the manufacturing?
If it's really about the fashion industry I'd love to read it.
But I've seen several talks by the author and she's always talking about environmental damage, pollution, worker rights, how we all buy too many clothes, and should recycle clothing, etc. I want fashion industry inside scoops, not lectures.

(For anyone who wants to read about the fashion industry I recommend two books by Teri Agins, who developed the fashion beat for the Wall Street Journal.
-- The End of Fashion: How Marketing Changed the Clothing Business Forever (2000)
-- Hijacking the Runway: How Celebrities Are Stealing the Spotlight from Fashion Designers (2014)
Very interesting tidbits about fashion marketing, rivalries between designers, etc.)
