Really wish people would give specific examples (preferably with links to photos, so we could see exactly what they are referring to) when they write things like "the clothing wasn't flattering on her" or "it was hideous" or whatever. I don't remember EVER seeing Mrs. Obama and thinking "Holy crap, what was she thinking?!!"; on the contrary, I think she has always looked terrific. [snip]
Maybe they are in the school of thought that pear shaped people shouldn't acknowledge they have hips by wearing clothing that accentuates them.
This is a very interesting article from the Washington Post about FLOTUS wardrobe. I'm a business person so I was very much interested in the ramifications (or lack thereof) of her choices for the well-being of the fashion businesses.
I'm old enough to remember when it was said "a real lady never shows her bare arms or legs" yet Mrs. Obama did so and with much class.I love her style and even though I'm not really into fashion I do enjoy seeing what she is wearing for special occasions.
When was that said? I know I've seen pics of Jackie Kennedy wearing sleeveless dresses before...that was a common look in the '60's and she looked great.
I agree that Mrs. Obama has worn some great fashion - and I think it was because she was somewhat younger than recent past first ladies that she was able to wear what she did...and while she might not have been a size 4, she was in quite good shape and was toned...she was not like a scrawny older lady (thinking Mrs. Reagan, for example) or a matronly lady like Mrs. Bush. So she could dress with much greater flair and I think she did well for herself and in representing the U.S.!

When was that??? My mom wore sleeveless dresses in the 50's and I think most people thought of her as a 'real lady'
Agree. I actually liked the way Michelle wears fashion...It was very regal. Princess Grace was also another example of a woman who didn't let the fashion overwhelm her presence.

Mrs. Obama was raked over the coals for her bare arms. Maybe it was a southern thing or else women of a certain age weren't supposed to. She rocks the look IMHO.

I agree with this.
I thought she always looked great. I think she also looks like she feels great. She looks relaxed and confident in almost anything. Can't think of a time I ever thought "she looks terrible in that!"
Mod cut.
