I would think Kate Middleton has a dressmaker who makes clothes for her to her measurements including coat dresses. I was not able to find a single coat dress in a store - no one makes them. I sew clothes for myself and I found a beautiful coat dress pattern by Marfy and one day I will make it for myself (just need to find time).
Or maybe she gets stuff from high end designers where ordinary people can not buy

I think they are just easier to get across the pond. Look at the jacket styles available at British high street shops like Dorothy Perkins and ASOS.

I saw these lovely coats at a craft show.

If you are talking about actual dresses that close in the front like a coat does, then I don't think they are trendy now. And, frankly, I hated wearing them. The buttons in the front don't lay smooth when you sit down, and they want to gap at the bottom.

I suppose they will come back in style here some day because everything always comes back eventually.

I think the OP is referring to coats that are very tailored in a fit & flare style resembling a dress.

You really need to be long and lean to wear a coat dress properly. No tummy....

ASOS has super cute cheaper coats.

This one might do the trick OP:
ASOS | ASOS Trench with Full Retro Skirt in Midi Length

They have done a similar coat each year for the past 4-5, maybe longer.

That coat looks like she's wearing daddy's coat and put a belt on it. Definitely doesn't have the clean, tailored look of the ones worn by HRH.

One place you can look online that has a few styles you may be interested in is ModCloth.

This one in particular makes me think of the red coat that she wore on a trip to New Zealand (I think that's where it was ... when her skirt flew up as they were stepping off the plane?)

I have no idea where but I love them. You do have to have the body for it and it's not really a dress, just more of a knee length coat.
