One thing I like about her style is that she's never afraid to change things up and try something new. There's a lot of variety in what she's worn as FLOTUS.
The notable thing about Michelle Obama was that she dressed herself and her daughters off the rack, wearing clothes that any middle class American could afford. Jackie Kennedy was very stylish, but there is no doubt that she was a clothes horse. Eleanor Roosevelt was a real trend setter, and established such things as women wearing pants as acceptable.

Jackie was "dowdy"??? I thought she was the classiest dresser of ALL of them! I loved her early-60's style of dress and she always looked so put-together.
I think Laura Bush had the best-looking face, but she dressed modestly and it suited her. I got tired of Hillary's damn pantsuits all of the time. Michelle isn't afraid of colors and a little splash and I admire that, too. Each First Lady dressed according to her own person.
Who in the world would think Jacqueline Kennedy was dowdy? Did I miss something? She was like the perfect embodiment of beauty and class. When she wore a pillbox hat, we all had to wear pillbox hats, and dresses that skimmed the knee and were not form fitting. Mamie Eisenhower and Bess Truman were dowdy. But they embodied the way older women looked then. Once you were old, you were expected to wear subdued colors and sensible shoes. And some of the fifties' fashions were not kind to older women, either. Poodle hair cuts, for instance.
I've loved Michelle Obama's style. I also liked Laura Bush's as well.
To me, many former FLOTUS's had a style that was fussy and almost pretentious. Both Michelle and Laura seem a bit more casual - even in the formal wear.
Today, Michelle really missed the mark at the inauguration. She looked like a 1950s school marm without the coat, and a prison guard with the coat.
