What you see in the mirror is the opposite image of what others see you. I think I look good when I see myself in the mirror but in my pictures, I don't look as good.

The smile, the face looks "off" compared to my mirror image.

You can see the opposite phenomenon when you see what another person look like versus what they look like when they look in a mirror.

Anyone else notice this effect?

I'm not overly hung up on it, but I've never liked the way I look in most pictures. I think I'm a reasonably decent looking guy, but everything has to be just right for that to be captured in a picture.

IN photos I see a completely different person to who I think I am...

Absolutely. I have experimented by looking in the mirror and then taking a selfie right there, and the photo doesn't look good. My smile is crooked and one eye is smaller than the other. I am just not photogenic at all.

Yes, and not only that, but I noticed most people I know do not look as good in pictures as they do in real life. Cheap digital cameras and camera phones today just do not capture what someone really looks like. I hate all my pictures now, whereas growing up and as a younger adult I liked most of them (on film).

My face is quite symmetrical, so I don't see any noticeable difference, other than that the part in my hair is on the opposite side.

OP, it's just about not being photogenic, and it's common. The camera tends to bring out minor flaws, unless you have a talented photographer who can bring out a person's best angle.

My pictures turn out so terrible, I refuse to be in group pictures, casual photos, get-togethers, etc. I simply don't understand it. I don't think I'm bad looking, at least not in the mirror, but photographs make me look awful! I think a lot has to do with the person taking the picture. So many people take so damned long to just snap the picture! Everyone get together, smile, then, snap the picture already! Instead, they just stand there, for whatever reason I can't fathom, then when they finally do snap the picture I'm usually look down, or sideways, whatever. Then, I become a laughing stock---oh, Mary isn't too sure about this, guess she's checking out the guy next to her, or the floor is very important, etc, etc.

I read we change our facial muscles every 7 seconds. Ok, so, you need to snap the photo before 7 seconds! I've found spontaneous pictures of me look pretty good, but a stylized photo makes me look half asleep, or even worse, plain stupid, like someone with an IQ of 40 I want to have a professional portrait taken of dh & me for our upcoming anniversary, but am hesitant to do so because I photograph so poorly. I am willing to pay for a professional photographer, not JCP or Olan Mills

I've found the outcome of the photo has a lot to do with how the photographer feels about me. My MIL always took the most god-awful pictures of me, to the point I simply refused to have her take my picture. I swear, she wanted to get as terrible a picture as possible to send to people---oh, look what my son married

Perhaps a professional photographer has ways to compensate for people who's facial muscles move more rapidly than normal? At least one would assume a professional photographer wants to get a decent photo, not one that makes you look like some goon

Some people's faces photograph better from one side than the other. Also, standing or sitting at a slight angle will usually be more flattering than a straight-on shot...as straight-on photos (especially of the face) can sometimes look like mugshots.

Good lighting is important, too.
