To be fair, these are definitely not new. These puffy coats or "down jackets" as they're called, they've been around for a long while. Ralph Lauren and others have been doing this style since at least the 90's. Like most trends, this type of jacket was popular with the really expensive designers from around the world, and then eventually people want to have those jackets and that's probably how it got big. In Europe, they care a lot more about fashion than Americans do, for example. They'll eat up anything Ralph Lauren or Tommy Hilfiger or any of the European fashion trends.

I do notice that these puffy types of jackets are making a comeback. In certain countries, like Japan, the down jacket is huge. I just recently walked into a big, fashionable store at the mall, and they literally had an entire section of puffy jackets and nothing but puffy jackets. I think that was the only kind of jacket they sold. Imagine an entire side of the room with maybe 3 aisles and the wall perimeter filled with every Puffy jackets in every major color you can imagine, and even of different types (some warmer, some cooler). I should probably take a picture of it. That would be hilarious. It's definitely a trend. And, it hasn't had pushback, but you might be the start of it.

However, to be fair, there are advantages to the down jacket. The biggest advantage is that the down jacket is ultralight. For the amount of warmth it provides and the weight, it is very light and very packable. For an equivalent warmth level, you would need a much thicker and heavier jacket. Down jackets are actually functional in that sense. So, many people do wear them for that reason. That being said, not all models of the down jacket are very good at evaporating water. They can repel water, but they don't dry up as easily as other materials. However, that may vary depending on the material combination used.

Different jacket and coat types will be better for different occasions. The down jacket is meant for casual wear and not really for very rainy or very active activities (I guess they're not breathable? I don't know, that's what they say in the fashion world). Still it's interesting that the shininess of a lot of these down jackets make them really stand out. They're noticeable enough that they're a recognizable trend. It'll be interesting to see if the "ultralight" selling point of these jackets will be enough to make the down jacket a part of everyone's wardrobe or not.
