I prefer boat shoe for men's casual. Most men have hairy ugly feet.

I agree with Harpaint and prefer a boat shoe as opposed to sandals. Sandals on men creep me out for some reason, but if you must go with sandals, I agree with your female friend - choose the leather flip flops.

The question should also include which would look best with knee high black socks and a white plastic belt.

(I've always had the ones that you have marked 'sporty')

What kind would you recommend? Birkenstocks?

You don't think they look too dressy? As for occasion, I'm thinking along the lines of a trip to town, visiting friends or family, going to a casual restaurant, maybe a BBQ, or other social event (bday party, graduation party, etc)

I do think beach flip-flops are for college kids but leather ones are a bit nicer.
I thought it might be better to have more shoe covering the foot? I've been told the feet look good for a guy, but not used to wearing shoes that show the feet, maybe I just need to get used to it.

I keep mine taken care of. Friend is trying to talk me into getting a pedicure but that's more of a girl thing lol .

I like the fisherman's sandal with a closed toe for a lot of guys.

something like these?

Yeah, that is a concern. The friend says it's a good look (if they are leather) but I'm not sold on that.

Thought about those but at first glance thought they looked a bit odd. maybe that's just me.

Not really a boat shoe guy.

What do you all think of canvas sneakers? Like these;

Better look than sandals?

They don't seem as hot as a regular pair of gym shoes but not as comfortable as sandals.

For most guys, the more of the foot that is covered, the better! Unfortunately, about all except the fisherman style leaves grody toenails totally exposed - I really don't need to see that.
