I agree with Harpaint and prefer a boat shoe as opposed to sandals. Sandals on men creep me out for some reason, but if you must go with sandals, I agree with your female friend - choose the leather flip flops.
That's the only sandal suitable for going out, IMO. The first two look like things you'd wear around the house or at the beach/pool. The third looks too homemade and hippyish.
You don't think they look too dressy? As for occasion, I'm thinking along the lines of a trip to town, visiting friends or family, going to a casual restaurant, maybe a BBQ, or other social event (bday party, graduation party, etc)
I think all of these are fine for something casual and outdoors like a barbecue, or if you're running errands on the weekend. I personally prefer either the top one or the sporty one because I don't care for the look of a leather covering of the top of the foot, but that's just me. I do think beach flip-flops are for college kids but leather ones are a bit nicer.
I thought it might be better to have more shoe covering the foot? I've been told the feet look good for a guy, but not used to wearing shoes that show the feet, maybe I just need to get used to it.

Not really a boat shoe guy.
What do you all think of canvas sneakers? Like these;
Better look than sandals?
They don't seem as hot as a regular pair of gym shoes but not as comfortable as sandals.
For most guys, the more of the foot that is covered, the better! Unfortunately, about all except the fisherman style leaves grody toenails totally exposed - I really don't need to see that.
