I have a pair of slip on Sketchers that really aren't meant to be worn with socks. I never have any kind of foot odor except when I've worn those sneakers. It took me awhile to get used to wearing a closed shoe without stockings or pantyhose. Luckily my feet don't sweat but I sometimes put a little bit of foot powder in my shoe to make them more comfortable.
If you actually do any real exercise in sneakers without socks, you feet will get rubbed raw and you'll have blisters. It's much better to wear socks with closed toe shoes if you're going to be doing anything more than sitting around. And without socks, the sneakers will stink pretty badly. Some people consider that a plus.......but still, it's not a great thing. I would never wear socks with sandals, but I would never wear sneakers without socks for any length of time.
I hardly ever wear socks unless I'm going to do a lot of walking or exercising and then I wear my athletic shoes. All of my shoes are flats, leather slip on style, including a pair of Sketcher sneakers. I don't have a problem with foot odor and my feet don't sweat. I've been pulling this off for about 10 years
