We used to have someone like this at church....she was in her 90's, was a sweet person, but overdid it with the perfume. I was always tempted to ask her what kind she used, so I would know what scent/brand to avoid.
The worst was actually a guy on the treadmill next to me at the gym. BO combined with the worst men's cologne that he must have poured on with a bucket. Luckily he finished up quickly. The next person who used the treadmill started sneezing right when they got on.
This happens all the time at the gym. I cant recall ever going and gagging on women's perfume, but there is always at least one man who must have bathed in cologne before coming to the gym.
Aromas rarely bother me....But then I work in jewelry department and the cosmetic stand (with perfume) is next over. Its a brigade of aromas...and I love it!
Now if they are wearing garlic or onions then we can talk, til then...fragrances delight the senses!!
Sorry for those that are hyper sensitive...I do understand how intrusive it may be to your nostrils....
I know its hard to understand for others... I used to love my perfumes and would walk through the big dept stores at the makeup just to sniff even if I wasnt buying.... now though going through an airport is misery having to walk past the shops with all the smells and the only way into the departure lounge so Im captive.. I was to scream at the sales girls just waiting with a spray in their hand hoping to drench someone... only now they have to ask thankfully before they do... years ago they just squirted it willy nilly over everyone.... so yes I understand how difficult it must be for others to see how hard life had become for some of us with illness causes with chemicals.. I just wonder about all the people who arent sensitive , are they also harming themselves without knowing...
Many medical practices ban the use of all scented products. It isn't just perfume that you have to be careful about, but also body wash, soaps, shaving cream, laundry detergent, lotion, etc. I, personally, do not care for any scented products. I am very glad that there are a number of scent-free options available for most products I purchase.
I differ with a lot of the responses. I actually like it. My ex used to do it, usually only when we or her are going out. Which is the way it should be.
Cheap perfume always gets me, especially when I'm caught in an elevator with one.
Don't single out "cheap" as bad. How many older women are still wearing Tabu - once touted as the most expensive perfume? Of course they wear the cologne and dusting powder versions but it is OVERPOWERING!
I am extremely sensitive (allergic) to many perfumes or strong chemical scented products. It gets so bad that I will get very ill immediately when exposed to them. I don't know if anyone else has experienced this but I also get it in my throat and then I can taste it for days before it ever goes away. Many of them also burn my nose and shoot straight to my sinuses and give me a headache.
But I also remember to this day, from over 30 years ago, the distinct smell of a guy that I used to work in a cubicle next to. He never bathed/showered, his hair was so greasy and his clothes were always dirty and wrinkled and he was always very unkempt. He smelled horrible but the worst part of it was that he would drowned himself in this nasty smelling cologne to try to cover it up. It never worked and only made it twice as bad. Many of us used to complain about it all the time to our manager but nothing was ever done. Back then no one wanted to be the one to have to tell him nor did they know how to tell him. Blech, I will never forget that combined smell.
Now, I have a couple that moved in across the hall from me recently and one of them (I assume the guy) always wears this heavy and horrible smell of a musk cologne. I have never liked the smell of musk even when it came out over 30 years ago. It permeates into my apt and makes me sick to my stomach. I have tried everything I can to get rid of the smell or mask it somehow but nothing has worked. But I can only try just so many things because so many things bother me.
I even had a gal that used to live above me that every time she was drying her clothes I had to close my windows during nice weather because whatever laundry detergent she used was so perfumed that I almost passed out from the smell.
