I was curious about this rule. I don't usually have a lot of white, but as it turns out I bought white jeans and a white pleated skirt this year. So just curious if this rule is still observed.
If it makes a difference, I live in NJ and commute to the city every day.
I usually follow this 'rule' but this year I'm going to wear white almost everyday this week. Then I will put it all away. I bought some really cute pants this season and I want one more wear. I live in the southwest, so no one really knows about this 'rule'.

Why not go to the NYC forum (I assume there is one....) and ask the question. That convention of no white after Labour Day may still be observed, at least in certain strata of society/business. Probably a good thing to check out.
I live in the far West, so actually have no idea at all.....
I've never paid any attention to that rule. However, once winter hits, I will avoid white pants or shoes. But that is mainly because once snow starts, it is way too easy to get them dirty.
I think it can be a sensible "rule" depending on where you live. Here in the PNW, September can be safe enough for white, but it can also RAIN, too, and I wouldn't want mud on my white clothes. But for some states it shouldn't be an issue at all. I wear white during the summer only because I like to have a little sun-kissed color on my face first.
I wear what I want and I live in the Northeast where we have seasons. My White jeans won't be put away until toward the end of September. My White/Beige sandals and flats will be worn until then as well.

Unless you are a lawyer or in some other super conservative field no one will care.
I live in Florida now so only some of the very senior citizens abide by that archaic rule. I wear white all year long here. When I lived in NY, I wore winter white after Labor Day which is more of a cream color. I had winter white boots, cashmere sweater and a coat.
