Yes, I've been called "sir" on the phone a few times because I have a lower-pitched voice.
When I was 19, I experimented with a "butch" style haircut which I dyed multiple colors. I was mistaken for a guy when a girl who was with another girl came up to me and informed me that her friend liked me because I was her type of guy.
I had a friend once who looked very androgynous. Her hair was dark and curly, and flopped down in her face, so it looked like a guy with long-ish hair. She said when she'd go into stores, the salespeople would call her "sir". She also didn't wear dresses or skirts, so that didn't help. I first met her on a college study program. Some of the other women and I were checking her out, trying to decide if she was a guy or a girl, because a guy with that look would have been appealing, at our age.
Only thru correspondence as I carry a name that is more known as a guys name.
Worse is when they think I am of a certain ethnic group because of my last name. They are overly cautious on the phone and "assume" that I am from a particular culture and they try to speak real slow....as If I am knew to the English language!!
My Daughter in law now gets to know that feeling when folks call her...and she is a teacher .
I had short hair when I was a little girl, so people sometimes mistook me for a boy, especially when I wore certain clothing. As an adult, I have been nearly bald at times, but never mistaken for a man, as I don't project masculinity in any way.
A couple times. By guests of friends who came to the ranch and have odd notions of work.
Once a man asked our friend "Can that little guy over there really do the work?" Our mutual friend responded (loudly, because he knew I'd find it funny) "That little guy is Ms Brandy and these are her cows."
But, hey, in coveralls and pack boots it's kind of hard to tell. :-)
I haven't, but my DH has. His hair gets a lovely wave to it when it gets a little on the long side and from the back, it looks like a perm. We always say that he knows it's time to get a haircut when we go out to eat and the server comes up from behind him and says, "Hi, ladies!"
