Well-made dressers are expensive -- hundreds of dollars. Then is the affordable but cheaply-made pressed-wood kind from Ikea or Wal Mart. Can someone suggest a different way of storing jeans, socks, underwear, t-shirts, belts and such? Milk crates would be a bit too crude.

There are many ways to store clothes. Short term in well aired closet, or wardrobe - long term in plastic containers with lid. Some clothes must be put on hangers, other could be folded and kept on shelves, or in dressers.

If you don't like "cheaply-made pressed-wood kind from Ikea or Wal Mart" you can get you a customized storage system or wooden armoire. I don't think your expensive clothes really care, though... But even a cheap pressed wood wardrobe closet is way better than a milk crate

For small items, you can use this:

Long term stored clothes must be washed before storage. They should be kept in a storage that is not too hot or humid. As long as you find somewhere to keep your clothes that is dry, cool, clean and dark (since bright light fades colors), they should look as fresh coming out of storage as they did going in.
Vacuum seal should be used only for short term storage.

I roll my clothes and keep them in travel type bags. Recently used a set that has been stored in the car for about six months. Smelled fine and looked good.

Thanks, Elnina and DavidT.... and when I said "store," I meant didn't mean long-term storage, just keeping them handy in the bedroom. I have lots of wire shelving; maybe I'll buy several duffle bags and put them on the shelves, one for each kind of clothing (e.g. blue for underwear, red for socks, etc.) Informal, but better than milk crates.

Um - you ever hear of thrift stores?

You can find real wood dressers / chests of drawers. Most likely, they will need some TLC and a hardware upgrade to look good, but it's worth the effort.

Those white plastic shelves that snap together make sturdy shelves and you can fold your clothes and stack them on those shelves. They don't look bad and if you don't have a lot of hanging clothing, those shelves will fit in your closet.

If you watch craigslist long enough, every now and again there will be a very well made dresser for a low price. Good quality furniture doesn't come along very often, but if it is on Craigslist, it will be at low used furniture prices.

I'd look for an estate sale where you can find a nice, well made piece inexpensively.

My Winter wardrobe is wool [shirts, pants, sweaters, etc]. My Summer wardrobe is mostly cotton.

In my closet I have a cardboard drum that I use to store all of my out of season clothing. I also have a couple socks filled with cedar chips that I keep in that drum.

Almost everything I am currently wearing is hung in my walk in closet. Out of season clothes are stored in drawers.

I even store sweaters on hangers, even though you are not supposed to.

Out of season wool garments are stored in a big bin with some moth crystals to discourage moths.
