- BIG HAIR - BIG BAD HAIRSTYLES. If you had naturally silky, full but fine hair, you were pretty much told to perm it. I chose a spiky pixie over the perm. However, not everyone can carry off very short hair.
- NEON COLORS. Really tacky and right colors in clothes for both women and men.
- The trend of wearing leggings with oversized Tee shirts or sweaters, often worn with white sneakers and thick bobby socks.
- The Madonna Look. "nuf said.
- The mullet for men.
- Bright plastic oversized earrings and other large, chunky fake jewelry.
- voluminous skirts, voluminous jeans, jeans with elastic at the ankles.
- very long nail extensions with jewels, drawings, glitter etc.
- tanning beds
- those ugly Rebock sneakers.
- sandblasted denim in very light colors.
- the return of dowdy wwhite mid heel shoes with dresses and pants. I had thought that "white shoes" were for rides or nurses. I hopethey never come back.
- Huge Ho bo shapeless purses.
_ banana clips.

I feel sick....
idk, other than the tanning beds (which is still a thing, or at least maintaining some sort of tan), this post made me nostalgic.

Haha. I understand. About 20-yrs ago, someone interviewed Joan Rivers & brought out old pics of her from TV appearances in the 60s, in shiny dresses, long fake lashes & big teased hair, to chide her a bit. She stopped the interviewer right away & said that it didn't matter now, cuz at the time, white frosted lipstick, beehives & blue eye shadow looked great.

Looking back, I suppose everything is dated. Besides everyone likes different styles of dress anyway, whether in fashion or not & none of us likes every current style. And, then they recycle again, in some form or another, at some point.

When I was a wee one, my bell bottoms, paisley dresses & aviator frames were groovey! Now... yeah, not so much.

No way were the 1980s the worst. I think the 1970s were the worst.

I think 1980s fashion was very fashionable; a lot of it seemed to call back the 1940s (with the shoulder pads) and 1950s. My biggest issue is how "stuffy" it was. I just remember it as the decade where everyone was covered up and buried under tons of baggy, layered, over sized tops, over sized sweaters, over sized dresses, everything:

I hated the shoulder pad craze, and when I was in high school, the first thing I did when I got a new shirt was rip them out.

Some of them were lovely. I couldn't afford them, so my mother made a jumper and matching blouse for me using a Laura Ashley pattern and LA fabric. Custom tailoring.

There was also a retro 1940s thing going on then.

Fashions of the early 1950s were ugly. Think calf length skirts and high heels, odd hair, tightly corseted waists, really full skirts. Audrey Hepburn was the exception; she looked amazing in whatever she wore.

I loved the fashions of the early '70s. Later in the decade, not so much.

I think some of the ugliest fashions of the 20th Century were found in the late '30s and early '40s. And then, in the early 1950s. The fashions of the 1960s were reactions to the cinched waists and permed hair of the 1950s.

What is bad, in retrospect, with 1980s fashions were the shoulder pads and the odd hair. Later, the cut of the clothes got really baggy. I didn't like the oversized double breasted jackets either.

But when I look at early 1950s movies or TV shows, I shudder at the fashions women wore. So restricting.

I still Love looks like this. The preppie look before it became a caricature of itself. The Shetland wool and fair isle sweaters, penny loafers, Turtlenecks, plaid kilts. The jeans tucked into the LL Bean Maine Hunting boots and down vests...the wardrobe of my college years in Massachusetts.

Hair, makeup, clothes, etc...all was as horrible as atrocious as such things can be.
This isn't 1997. Nobody wears saggy pants anymore.
