I bought a Dockers sweater with a quarter zip in a few different colors. The first time I wore each of them, the collar was fine. Then I washed them. Now the collars don't stay straight. They bend (or roll) inwards.

I can't find the exact sweater but it is very similar to this: https://www.kohls.com/product/prd-29...Fc9TDAodo7UNbw

What do I need to do to keep the collar straight? Do I need to zip it up before washing? Do I need to iron the collar?

You should always zip zippers, button up, etc. (and turn inside out preferably) before washing.

Oh really? With all clothes (jeans, button-down shirts, etc.)?

especially the inside out part. Unless you are digging ditches the dirtiest part of the clothing is the portion that touches your body (sweat, oils) also turning the item inside out helps to preserve the color.

Oh my gosh. That makes so much sense but I never realized it. It seems like a pain to turn everything inside out and then turn it back though.

You don't have to do it w/undies, etc. - how long do you think it takes to stick your hand/arm down a sleeve or leg and pull it out?

With the quarter zip sweaters, I find that ironing them straight can help to retain the shape, but I tend not to machine dry mine, so they are zipped and hanging to dry, hence the collars don't tend to warp a bit.

Zipping is good to help prevent snagging on other clothes - if you're doing a load of all jeans it doesn't matter but combining open zips with shirts or other items can do some damage, especially over time.
