Can anyone explain to my why women walk around in shoes that are clearly several sizes too large?
I see this all the time at weddings and other 'dressy' affairs. I can't even begin to imagine doing that to myself- but apparently I'm in the minority.

Usually because they're borrowed. You see it a lot on red carpets.

Your thumbnail pic looks about a half-size too large, not "several sizes."

If the heel is over a certain size, I suppose gravity forces the foot further down the front of the shoe. So you can have more of a gap at the back of the shoe?

Many women's shoe designs simply don't fit most feet well no matter what size they are. The combination of the fetishization of women's feet and the cheapness of materials (as most women's clothing, as women are expected to 'turn over' their clothing much more rapidly than men) is what creates this. Many women have little idea that shoes are supposed to be comfortable and aid in walking, not inhibit it. Women endure a great deal of discomfort and foot disfiguration and distortion because of societal demands on what their shoes should look like.

Fit is way way down the list of things women's shoes are supposed to do.

They are not too big by size. When you have a heels like that, the foot just slides down by gravity, creating little free space by the heel.

I am sure those rich people can borrow the right size that fits perfectly.
The gap is explained above, by a woman who knows...

Bras and high heels, along with pantyhose, always made me glad I'm a man. Our most consequential fashion question is "boxers or briefs?".

Borrowing....or finding a pair on sale would explain it - women also have been known to buy shoes that are too small and THAT really hurts! A half or even whole size too big can usually work.
