Nail art as a rule is on about 15 million YouTube channels. It might not be for everyone, but it's definitely still being done...accent nails and otherwise.
A few years ago, lesbians used thumb rings to identify each other. I noticed a friend had a thumb ring and asked the significance; she said she and her daughter had gotten them to be "twinsies". I'm pretty sure she was straight; I didn't bring up the lesbian angle.
The things people come up with...
Most of my friends were wearing thumb rings in third grade.... It had nothing to do with our sexuality, it was just a trendy thing to do.
A few years ago there was a big thing on FB about doing this as an awareness campaign. I think it was related to learning disabilities but it may have been for kids on the autism spectrum or mental health related. It was all over my mom and teacher friend’s FB pages. I noticed most of them had their nails panted that way during that month when I was helping at the school. It might not mean anything to most people today but that’s definitely the first time I saw the trend and it seems to still be popular with this same demographic.
I tried to google to find the exact issue and didn’t find it but did find the same thing for a domestic violence awareness campaign from 2015.
And this is why people shouldn't jump on trends without understanding the meanings behind them
So anytime I want to do my nails or wear a certain color or use a certain makeup or wear a certain hat I have to research first to make sure it doesn't mean I'm offering free sex to lesbians?

Uh, ok.
It was sarcasm. It just meant that in this case at one point it probably coincided with the finger flagging.
But no trends usually start out because either someone really does like it or the ad companies want to brainwash you so they can make money. The advertisers know that people are highly influenced by what they see others wearing.
