I can tell you they work great for active and work wear. I bought a couple pair of "Stretch" Hiking Cargo Pants that are very comfortable while hiking, especially if you get into any "rock scrambling" or climbing on all fours. Additionally with climbing ladders, carrying boards, bending to pick up materials, etc. they cannot be beat. I have been practically living in them since I bought them...

Also, as my life gets very active with outdoor recreation and/or laborious work, I can go up and down a whole pants size at times. The stretch fabric can handle the two differences sometimes without having to wear two separate pairs of pants....

There are at least six (6) different cuts Levi's sell that have a range of slimmer/skinnier fits than the 505.
I just purchased the dark grey twill 505 and a stretch 501 and classic indigo 501. The 505 was the only one with a tighter at the waist fit. I carry extra weight, but not that much to notice such a difference.

Weatherproof has a good fitting twills line, but can't seem to time the purchase right. Could only find them at Marshall's.

Stretch pants for men are not popular with the coveted 20-35 year old demographic.
Stretch pants for men are not popular with working class men.
Stretch pants for men are not popular with any man i know.

It may only be popular with a very very very tiny and small segment only in certain geographical locations among only a few who happen to be very outwardly "fabulous" gay men. So, in conclusion of this ridiculous thread title, "stretch pants" are absolutely not popular at all with men.
+1.

i like the stretch fabric as well, it doesnt look stretchy, but when i go out to sertain places i will wear them, obvioulsy not work.
but in restaurants where the chairs are not really comfortable, the stretch in the denin is good, it gives a little and is not tight on my butt and privates.....so i like them. I onlyhave 2 pairs, black and navy, im not fashion contious...

well waist is one thing - that sounds more like an inconsistent fit (which is common among Levis these days which is one reason I stopped buying from them). Waist size should not change among styles (*rise* might, but with quality control, waist size should not).

When they talk about different cuts, they are talking about rise, thigh opening, tapering at the legs, etc.

also one other thing, when people/brands talk about stretch, that is NOT necessarily the same thing as people talking about something that fits skin tight. A lot of brands sell version of their jeans, chinos, dress pants, etc. with a bit of 'stretch' to allow for more movement. IE, I like my stretch chinos or my stretch denim better when I am commuting by bike. I get the same tailored fit I get for my other chinos and denim, where I tend to prefer a more traditional fabric with no stretch because they hold their shape better.

Yes, I have seen some loose fit jeans with stretch denim at Old Navy.

yes, stretch is the nature of the fabric, not the fit. There are various reasons stretch is more popular today. But it is found in all sorts of cuts and fits, not just skinny/extra slim or fitted wear. You can find stretch fabric used in plenty of straight leg products as well.
