Hey there, well the current shorts i have are from banana republic but bought many years ago. I dont know the inseam but if i had to guess, it has to be either 11' or 12'. Reason is because when i went to gap, i tried a 10' one which i thought was too short because it shows my kneecaps etc. The 12' did cover my kneecaps and felt right.

However, it seems all articles seem to agree 9-10 inch inseam is the best? The other thing i dont understand is this. They say men under 5'9 should be wearing 7' inseam. First off, the 10 inch inseam from gap already seemed very short. If i tried the 7 inch one, it would be like im showing half my upper leg etc. That certain does not look good on me.

What confuses me a bit is are there guys that are 5'8 or so and wear 11' or 12' inseam shorts? Im in my early 30s and worn shorts that are around my kneecaps ever since i was 18 etc. It always felt comfortable. I always thought men shorts the casual ones, it shouldn't show your kneecaps? The thing that im also confused is this. When you look at models wear shorts on gap or banana republic, they say model is wearing 32 waste and say 10'. You see the shorts are an inch or so above the kneecaps. However, if you are 5'8 or shorter than 6'2 model, then wouldnt the 10 inch inseam make it look more ridiculous? Because when i wear the 10' inseam and since im 5'8, wouldn't that mean its like 2 inches or a bit more above my kneecap?

Hey there i made a mistake in what i mentioned. I just tried on my banana republic shorts again and when i stand up, the shorts end right in the middle of my kneecap. Thus its halfway down the kneecap. I saw a picture online where they say that is actually the safe bet... halfway down the kneecap. So that is what is the best option?

The thing is the 10' one i have tried on before at another store, you could clearly see my kneecaps as its about 1 inch or so showing my kneecaps. The 12' one i tried on, it definitely covers my entire kneecap and it just looks a bit long etc. So does that mean 11' is the best inseam for someone that is around 5'8? Also can someone tell me how you are suppose to know which shorts are 7', 10', 11' or 12'?

Do you basically take a measuring ruler/tape and just mention from the top to the bottom of the shorts? Thus i want to know exactly how long is my banana republic shorts that i wore for a while. These are my favorite shorts but one pair has holes in it etc. And i want to get the same pair but these were from a while back and BR doesn't seem to have it anymore.

A couple of inches above the knee is best, assuming you have nice legs.

as for measuring the length, it's the inseam number they are giving. So the bottom of the shorts on the inside of the leg, up to the crotch.

And that's an entirely logical measurement to present. It's up to a wearer to figure out where that inseam length will fall on his own thigh.

I always felt comfortable wearing shorts where it cover kneecaps. But is it not suppose is my question.
I feel the opposite, that shorts that cover the kneecap don't look good. They seem too long. If you're going to go that low, you might as well wear long pants, IMO. I don't like super short shorts, but I do like shorts to end a little bit above the kneecap.

The worst look IMO is overweight guys with loose and long shorts. That looks awful, IMO.

I think people should wear what they are comfortable with. It's good to defy what other people say you should wear.

I'm starting to think you just like the word "kneecaps."

I would say don't go right in the middle -- it's probably the worst like taking a photo. I think shorts should be above the kneecaps. How much above is up to you.
