Years ago, 100% cotton t-shirts were horrible. After a few washings the collar, shoulders,
and everything else was distorted and stretched out of shape. That's why I always buy blended
fabric t-shirts (cotton/polyester).
I started to see men's colored t-shirts in local stores when I was teenager. I never liked plain
white. I've been buying colored t-shirts for several decades.
Have textile manufacturers fixed the problems with 100% cotton t-shirts? I see nice all cotton
t-shirts in local stores, but I'm still afraid to buy.

I typically prefer 100% cotton for sleepwear and cotton/poly for going out, although I also like Polo Ralph Lauren's T-shirts for going out.
I buy the 100% cotton directly off of the Hanes website. They launder well, the fabric doesn't twist. Shrinkage is minimal (depends upon your laudry technique).
There are a lot of really bad tshirts for sale out there, though.
Yes, Hanes 100% cotton look good. I'll buy a few locally. If they survive the washing machine, I'll order a bunch from the web. I'll never forget an all cotton t-shirt I purchased many years ago. The collar stretched so bad after a few washings it could almost fit over my shoulders! That's why I started buying blended fabric t-shirts.
Yes, Hanes 100% cotton look good. I'll buy a few locally. If they survive the washing machine, I'll order a bunch from the web. I'll never forget an all cotton t-shirt I purchased many years ago. In summer or if I am down in Florida I wear white Hanes Comfort Soft Tees in 100% cotton...Love white as it reflects the heat and I also desire a good clean fit and must be comfortable and they fit the bill for myself. And I wash them often and never experienced any shrinkage or distortion like you described in your original post...In Florida I use mostly the dryer but at home in NY I will take them from the wash machine and put them in the dryer for only a few minutes and than hang them out on the clothes line in my yard.. No wrinkles after being in the dryer for a few minutes and also smell so good from drying outside. And the fit remains excellent with no shrinkage or distortion....I like to look nice so I would not tolerate a tee that couldn't handle being washed and dried if it lost its fit or distortion etc.
I have had Hanes previously and did experience some shrinkage so I think the key as far as I am concerned is that the Hanes COMFORTSOFT label is a better quality shirt or cotton....
A friend gifted me once with some Calvin Klein's white tees and in my opinion they got out of shape after repeated washes and drying whereby the Hanes ComfortSoft label stayed just fine.....she had told me she bought them from Amazon but maybe they were knock offs but for sure nowhere as good the quality as the Hanes Comfort Soft

For premium brands such as Calvin Klein the seller is important, since they are at high risk of counterfeiting. Hanes is an economy brand, so the risk of counterfeiting is low.
I am surprised you are afraid to buy any sort of tee shirt! They cannot harm you in any way.
I assure you that if you buy several higher end shirts, wear and wash them, you will suffer no harm. And—you’ll know if you can rely on them to stay true to color and shape.
By the way, almost all cotton shrinks lengthwise. Better quality cotton tees should shrink less than cheaper ones, but you should wash on cool cycle, and dry on gentle cycle. Finish the drying on a hanger, after shaping the shirt.
I wear a freshly washed "T" shirt everyday winter / summer (heck, I wear T shirts year 'round) never having a shirt that looks "nasty". Never ever wear the same shirt two days in the same week.

I probably should have put in my note that I buy the Hanes heavy weight T's because I wear them as shirts, not as undershirts. Their websites offers several different weights and styles of t-shirts. The other weights might be perfectly good, but I've got no personal experience with them.
Other T's I've bought, and sometimes rather expensive ones, I've had the neck stretch problem and the side seams twist so that they no longer go straight down from the arm pit.
I've had other brands that I used in the past, go bad, one by one. I assume as production went overseas and not enough attention paid to the quality of foreign made fabric.
Fingers crossed that Hanes can maintain their quality.
