Like you just say 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s and you can get some very unique images of the times, but even as a millenial I can't really think of any real unique distinct style/theme in terms of fashion or what have you since the start of the 21st century other than the early 2000s being more or less extension of the 90s.
Could you really see the style/theme of the 90's while you were living thru the 90's? Or is it just that looking back on the 90's now, you can see the style? It might be that we don't notice anything really standing out while it's everywhere. I think the styles people will think of for this decade are skinny jeans, bling on the back pockets, winged eyeliner and fake lashes. The style of the previous decade involved a lot of yoga pants and Uggs and that hairstyle that looked like a bump on top of the head just behind the bangs, along with big sunglasses with lots of designer logos. The popular purse designer of this decade is Michael Kors, and the previous decade was Coach.
Well, we’ve seen huge metal laden purses come and go. Boots, whether tall or short are everywhere. Long shapeless dresses have come and gone. In fact, I’d say that one of the big style changes in the last 18 years has been the return of skirts in general.
Pantyhose disappeared and has reappeared. Colored tights are a huge look now, and have been for several years. And we’ve left oversized jackets behind, as well.
In terms of silhouette, we lost the last vestiges of shoulder pads at the beginning of the century. There are more body conscious fashions—as in fitted waists—than there used to be.
Overall, I think we all have many more choices than we used to. That is fine with me.
