I like a mascara that simply covers and separates, non-clumping. Don't want super thick or long. I have light (graying) hair and fair complexion. For most of my adult life, I avoided black mascara thinking it would be too harsh. However...
I started using Doll 10 Effortlash over a year ago, and have been very happy. It only comes in black. It's expensive ($18-20) at full retail, but if you shop carefully, you can get it from reliable sellers for under $9.00 on eBay.
I've been married for 45 years and all I've ever noticed was (rather ugly color combo) pink with green top and now a pink with black top as well, I'm told Maybelline Great Lash comes in both washable and waterproof, maybe why the different colored tops. I noticed because yesterday, Jan 1st, there was some grumbling as two old ones Had To Be thrown out - they expire 6 months after opening so no matter how much is left it must go. Apparently Jan and July are new mascara months in our home.

January and July are great new makeup months, especially if you buy from drug stores. After Christmas is when everything goes on clearance to make room for new stock, and the same happens around July/August.
I like to treat myself after Christmas to some new makeup, trying new products once they are marked down.
