As I've been out in about in cold weather I've sometimes noticed people wearing stocking caps but leaving their ears uncovered. What's the point in even wearing a hat if you do that? Not meant to be a rant and this isn't a serious conversation, just wondering why someone would do that.
Well, the great thing about a sock hat is that you can adjust it for the amount of warming you need. The people you see, may have just been doing something more strenuous, or have higher natural temp.

I suppose the simplest explanation makes the most sense.
I have a couple of hats that don't stay down over my ears. They are very thick, tightly knit and they seem to almost pull themselves up and eventually almost off my head.
Sometimes, for females anyway, having hair that covers the ears is enough to keep the ears warm. But wearing a hat on top of your head helps keep everything warmer, because warm air rises, so as long as the top of the head is covered...it's all good.

For some young people it's to look cool but in most cases of people having all or part the ears being uncovered it's happening because of the shape of the back of their head and the high or low placement of their ears. Not all head shapes are equal and some heads can NOT keep a stocking cap over the ears for love nor money no matter how big the cap is and the wearers are constantly having to tug them down over the ears. And then the silly cap wants to slide forward over the forehead and cover the eyes instead. Add some different types, strengths and lengths of hair into the equation and for some people the cap keeps on sliding up to the very top of the head, it can be almost as if the hair is standing on end actively pushing the cap off the head.
