Well, obviously, the answer to "how many blades are really needed" is ONE. (I for one am not going to take up pulling the hairs out by the roots, no sirree.)
I use both a plain old fashioned safety razor and a three bladed expen$ive insert type. The triple blade jobbie is almost impossible to cut myself with and the safety razor it's pretty easy if I don't pay attention. Most days I use the safety razor. I can't carry it on a plane so if I'm traveling I use the triplet.
So to me, I can't see how more than 3 would have any advantage.
The difference between a two-blade, a four-blade, and a twelve-blade is how close you’re getting to your face - or so they say. Supposedly, the first blade on a multi-blade razor lifts the hairs off your face, and the subsequent ones cut it, leaving a closer-to-the-surface cut.
With a single-blade safety razor, you’re cutting at an entirely different angle, and with a more powerful blade. This will give you a classic shaved feel, and it incorporates some of those classic manly-man customs like a shaving cream brush.
So if you’re just going for a daily to semi-weekly shave, and you’ve got a beard that doesn’t grow back by breakfast, then you should be fine with a two-blade razor. It gets the job done, and it with the right nonfoaming shave gel, you won’t experience that nasty razor burn.
The shaving companies need a justification to jack up their exorbitant prices even more, so they keep "innovating." A single blade probably works fine, but I use a razor with either 2 or 3 blades.
Anecdotally, I suspect business is down for them. I think the trend now is for guys to shave less often. I used to reflexively shave every day, then I cut out weekends, then I went down to three days a week and now I'm down to twice a week - if I'm working. If I'm on vacation, I shave maybe once per week.
I know I'm not alone, based on what I observe. In a business environment, it used to be unacceptable to even have a 5 o'clock shadow. Now, guys go days without shaving and it's fine. That has to be cutting into their business.

I don't use any of the modern multi-blade razors since I firmly believe that one blade is all that is ever needed. So my choice is ether a straight razor or a safety razor. NONE of the modern razor do more than seperate you from more of your money.
