No people said it happened and no one ever fact checked it. Probably one of Ralph Lauren's superfans that made up that rumor. Regardless of what happened he went on Oprah to clear the air and set things straight. The damage was already done but it was clear that he didn't care about Blacks wearing his fashion, if not then obviously from that point forward.

It took another generation that wasn't around for any of that to bring Tommy back from obscurity.

preppy will ALWAYS be around. It's been a style since the 1920s. What comes in and out of style, are people who imitate the preppy look.

Right now, prep imitation is not hot, but do not kid yourself, there are enclaves of places where people would not think of dressing in another way.

Basically. All Tommy and Nautica did was bring it to the mainstream, and once the mainstream bored of it the look goes back "underground" ie. to the people that were always into it because that is their life.
