I work in an environment where females go all year wearing anything from flip flops to sandals to sneakers to flats. On the one occasion that appearance matters, they ALL wear some variation of heels, often wedges. Why would they do that now? Can you say men have nothing to do with it?
Yes, men have nothing to do with it and you just provided the answer to your own question. Obviously appearances are not ever an important requirement of their duties at your place of work if they go all year wearing anything they want and there's only one time during the year when appearances are important. If there is only one occasion when appearances matter then they're dressing up in heels to go with the rest of their dressy attire that they will surely wear to show their respect for the occasion when appearances are important. Respect for the occasion, get it? Not for each other and absolutely, most certainly not for any men.

Because society-- largely run by men, yes, you're right-- has decided that heels are supposed to be *the* dressy go-to.

men wear ties. everyone wears some kind of professional wear.
Exactly. And ties are considered "professional," are they not? What has that to do with heels?
I'm laughing that you think ties and heels are comparable. I'll trade you...
If I have to wear heels to be "professional," then I don't want to be professional. If heels were so "professional," men would wear them. If men get comfortable shoes, I get comfortable shoes. And I don't exist to "turn anyone on," let alone random men on the street or acquaintances or coworkers.
OP, if you like heels so much and they reflect your personality, why don't you wear them?
I personally hate wearing flats (im wearing them right now) at 5ft tall i love my 4 and 5 inch heels but i cant wear them to work, Im in healthcare admin and am already dressed up compared to all the nurses in scrubs, wearing heels would just be too over the top.
