I had a different question in mind, but this is a simpler version of it and I have no idea what the answer will be; my only hunch is that it's a lot more common in extraverts. (That and more common in women who love fashion, of course.) I've included a poll, because I like those. If you borrow, please describe how it works.

I think borrowing clothes happens more if you grew up with sisters.

I think it might be tied to age and lifestyle? When I was young and went clubbing a lot my best friends and I thought nothing of borrowing 'party' clothes from each other. Maternity clothes were shared when I hit that stage of life. Once I hit my thirties that all pretty much stopped for whatever reason. Occasionally I will still borrow something from my grown daughter.
How it worked with me and my friends, since we more or less knew each others wardrobes all we did was ask to borrow such and such item.

For me? Almost never. I don't have that many female friends and growing up, everyone I knew was always significantly shorter than me.

My sister borrowed some of my clothes when she was interviewing for jobs after college and needed dressy clothes. When she was done with my clothes, she donated them to Goodwill. I've never loaned her anything since then.

Or have roommates. I might have borrowed clothes from people in college, but I can't remember a time recently when it's come up.

When I was a teenager, I used to borrow from my mom once in a while. I always asked first. A few years later, my sister and I were roomies, living on our own, and we borrowed and shared clothes and accessories. At the time, we rarely asked each other, but it never seemed a problem.

A few years after that, when I was a stay at home mom for a few years, she and I gathered up clothing we didn't wear anymore, and offered our stuff up to the other, to see if the other wanted any of it. Whatever we didn't want, we donated to goodwill.

And now, at this point in my life, it doesn't happen very often, but if I have something nice, but for whatever reason it doesn't fit, I always offer it to family members, if I think they might like it.

I think age plays a big factor. Sisters and roommates are very likely to borrow clothes (as long as they are close enough in size of course!) It's less common once people are not in shared living situations although it still happens sometimes. A big example would be maternity clothes, which often get passed around through several people because they are worn for a fairly short period of time. Another example might be formal clothing - the women in my local mom group (in a rather large planned urban community so we are talking a few thousand people here!) will sometimes post a request to borrow something for a particular event and there are always multiple offers.

I don't know how common it is, but probably more common among younger women and those in lower income levels.
