The terminology actually goes the other way around. It's usually a term cast down upon the lower class or perceived white trash.
While a 'wife beater' may be a tank top, a tank top is not always a 'wife beater' either.
I still have a couple of them from various Harley shops around the world. Don't wear them often but sometimes I just gotta show off my tats - hula girl on right arm, mermaid on the left. I've always appreciated fine art.

I don't like them as undershirts; they are present where I don't need any more insulation and they don't keep underarm sweat off the outer shirt. On the extremely rare occasions when I wear an undershirt I just wear a thin white T shirt.
But as hot natured as I am, and the way most people keep houses and buildings overheated, I'm usually wishing I could take some clothes off, not add more on.
