So I was having a conversation with my SO this morning about the fact that I do my own nails and have always. Actually I am embarrassed to say that I have never paid for a manicure - I keep my nails painted and it is a lot of work actually now that I am getting older none the less they are done by me. I want to know if I am the only woman out there that still does their own nails so if you dont mind please let me know what you do with your nails. Thanks Ladies !!

I like to get manicures once a month. I don’t do a good job with the cuticles or putting on my own polish, so I prefer to have someone else do it. And it’s relaxing. Yes, I know it would be cheaper to do them myself, but I can afford it.

Curious as to why only ladies?

Anyway, I haven't done my own nails since I was in middle school. But I never get manicures, only pedicures.

I mostly do mine. I don't think I ever had a professional manicure until I was about 50 and maybe 2-3 times since then when I had a special even coming up and had really messed my nails up with yardwork or something.
Every time I get one, they comment on how nice my nails are (I keep them fairly long) and the last one actually wanted to take pics (this was before the mani). I told them they were welcome to as long as they weren't using them for their website or advertising as tho they had done them.
It's nice to get pampered but really.. nobody ever does them quite as good as I do the way I like them and some of them like to get file happy which my nails don't like.

I go to the nail salon because I have acrylics but I was trained in how to do manis & pedis back in the late 70's when I worked at a salon before acrylics were around. Back then if the owner was a barber you didn't have to have a license. Very few women got mani/pedis back then.

I do my own manicure the day before my acrylic fill. I put on acrylics because of the deep ridges in my nail. When it comes to my pedicure, I haven't found anybody that does as good a job as I do. The only time I have them done is when my back is bothering me.

So your fingernails are 4 feet long and curling?

When I do my nails, I generally do them myself. A professional manicurist does a better job, frankly, but I find the process weird. Sitting in a salon while a stranger holds your hand and you have to make awkward small talk is not my idea of a great time. Doing it myself, I can sit at home and watch TV and try not to touch anything.

Professional only. I just can't make it look as good as they do.

I usually go the winter though - with no polish and just cut my own nails, use some Vitamin E, etc.

But when I try to polish my own hands OR my toes - it looks AWFUL.

I agree.

I've been doing my own nails since I was 12, and I don't like fake nails, so it's easy to polish them on my own time rather than work in a regular appointment.

Not to mention the expense I'd rather spend on something else.

I had one pedicure in my whole life, and I hated it. Sitting on a "throne" while a woman on a little stool bent over my feet was not relaxing to me.

Many women enjoy doing their own nails. No need to stop if you enjoy it. However, I think you should try a manicure at least once.

No need to make small talk. You don't owe anyone a conversation you don't want to have. As far as a stranger holding your hand, ever been to the dentist or hairdresser?
