My plan is to stay in my house, teaching and studying, until there is a vaccine. But what if Edward (my cat), Charley (my husband) or I need medical attention? To that end, can anyone recommend a mask? Looking at Amazon, there are a lot that have bad reviews. Recommendations appreciated.
Oh, I have a lot of prettypashminas. I wonder if that would work?
Don't go for pretty, go for practical and safe.
I wouldn't recommend pashminas to cover the face for more than a few minutes. Have you tried one for an hour or two yet, were you able to breathe comfortably with it covering your face? There's no way I could wear a warm animal wool fabric like that over my face, the condensation would make me feel like my face was in a hot steam sauna and I'd get a rash on my face and it would also cause increased shortness of breath and a sense of suffocation from fighting for fresh cool air.
The weave of that fabric is too tight to let fresh cool air in and stale hot air out, that is the whole purpose of the pashmina/cashmere wool and the weave, to keep warm body heat and humid air locked in tight against the body. But you should at least try it and if you find you can breathe fresh air comfortably enough through it for an extensive period of time without your face getting steaming hot and all sweaty then you're good to go.
If I had to use some kind of face cover I would use a light weight cotton bandana or head scarf with the corners tied to shape to the face if there was no proper face masks available. At least light cotton allows for more air circulation through the fabric. A silk scarf would work too and it's very light weight, cool and comfortable but silk fabric weave is tighter than cotton weaves and doesn't breathe quite as well.
Not necessary. I have a couple dozen of them, given to me from students' moms, from Nepal, Asia, Pakistan and other places in the Middle East. One is silk, which is against my principles, but the rest I think are cotton of some kind. Certainly not animal skins! Needless to say, a woman has to cover her hair in many cultures. A couple of them are black, but most of them are beautiful colors.
