Is there some trick to getting a necktie the right length when you are tying it? I usually have to retie it 2 or 3 times before it is the right length.

Practice, practice, practice.

Take notes on the length of each end before you start tying and where they end up when you finish. Then just duplicate that. (Like, big end hangs down 8" below little end, I get good result.)

Agree, practice. Check youtube and you can see where they place the tie on each side to get an idea of where they should be placed. Also, go with a Windsor knot.

I always put a piece of tape on the back of my tie (the thick part) or my wife would sew in a little marker or so, when I found the right length. Then, from there, I would always know when the thinner piece should sit and line up before I began tying it and such. I never switched the knot type, so it worked well for me.

I have no idea what a Windsor knot is (I mean I've hear the term but I don't know what it is). I only know one way to tie a tie

Practice, but also make sure that you have the right length tie. Some are longer or shorter than others. I'm not sure there even is a standard length for neckties. But they they do vary in length.

Specialty stores carry a number of lengths. Cheap ties tend to be shorter and often pieced together.

I've got an 18" neck (no, I'm not obese) and I feel your pain. When I finally get it right, there's not enough length on the back piece to slip into the label, so I always have an unkempt tie. I fixed that by retiring. Good luck!

Pretty sure they make clip-on ties.
