Is it ok to get a large jacket for a normal sized 5’6” woman ? (color, guys)

I got my GF a medium size sweater, and I ordered a large size jacket to go with it. Both of these are birthday gifts. Would it be too big for her ? I’m always used to ordering jackets one size up so that they fit over all the clothes you wear underneath. But I’m not sure if women like more fitted jackets as opposed to a more relaxed fit. Will size L be too large for a 5’6” woman ?

Depends on her weight. Are most of her clothes a medium? I think coats/jackets are sized taking into consideration the clothes underneath but it's been years since I've had to wear a coat. Some women would be insulted if you bought them a size larger than they wear.
What size is she? What size clothing does she usually wear? How large does she usually wear her jackets? It really depends on the person, their body shape/size, their preference, etc. Unfortunately, the only person who can really answer this question for you is her (or perhaps her close friends and family). Leave the tags on and hang onto the receipt in case she wants to exchange it for a different size-- you don't want her to never wear it because she doesn't like the fit.
GF usually doesn’t like tight fitted or cropped clothes. She generally seems to prefer correctly sized or slightly loose fitted clothes. She lives in Houston, so I’ve never seen her wear a jacket, only sweaters. I got it because she wants one while visiting me up north in winter.
Some women like a looser fit, some women like a more form fitting style.
Might depend on the style, to answer your question. For example, if you were buying me a bomber style leather jacket, I'd want a looser fit so it settled around my hips, instead of my waist. Same would go for a denim jacket. (For me).
If you were buying me a biker style leather jacket, and I was a rider, I'd want a more form fitting jacket. (Less wind resistance.)
And I, personally, would not be offended if you went up a size than I usually wear. I would take in to consideration that you gave it your best estimate, and appreciate that you tried.
Every model of every brand has its own sizing. "Medium" in one brand will be "Large" in another. It's bad enough in men's clothing but it's a hundred times worse in women's. My wife (a fairly small, thin person) wears number sizes ranging from 12 to 0 depending on the store, and general sizes ranging from "Small" to "Large".
So all your speculation is probably for naught. Keep all the receipts and tags so she can take it back and get the right size.
If she layers a lot then that would work. I tend to layer my clothing so I can either peel it off or put it on during the day in the winters here in the south. I wear a small and get my jackets in a medium.

Right, and it's always a crap shoot to try to buy clothes for other people. It might be better, the next time she visits, that she pick out something in the style and color she wants, and you treat her to it.
I often buy outwear the next size up. It accomodates for layers and scarves, and also fits better around the chest area.
Guys, we are in the middle of a pandemic, so I bought it online. If it were non pandemic times I would go with her to buy what she wants.

GF has never criticized me for getting her a gift, and has always told me it’s a sweet gesture.
