How is US Polo Assn upscale brand? It has always been positioned as affordable casual clothing, it's nowhere close to Polo brand. You can find leftover stock of famous brands at many outlets and retailers so no big deal.
I never said they were upscale, but I always thought they were a step above economy brands like Hanes, Gildan, or Fruit of the Loom.
Well, Walmart.com is somewhat of a different animal; Walmart sells some mid-range clothing brands on its online store and tends to be more attractive to these brands than physical Walmart stores. However, I actually saw USPA polos in a physical Walmart store.
It tried to catch on the Ralph Lauren wagon, but it didn't work. IMO
Walmart though, I will say is making some major investments to try to upgrade their product lines. They are facing fierce competition from Amazon, and they realize that they need to elevate the brand a bit to stay competitive.
I do not see them selling the likes of Nike or Addidas. But I think they are going to sign on some more brands that were sold at shuttered department stores like JC Penney.
For example, Target now sells Levi jeans. They never use to sell full blown Levi, they sold a lower end rebranded version of a Levi jean.
But now some Target stores they sell the $50 Levis. I see Walmart following suit but on a bit lighter scale.
This is actually more common in Europe. Department stores are not very common in Europe. They have individual branded stores or big box stores similar to a Target or Walmart and they sell many elevated brands within those along with everyday household good, electronics, toys, etc.
For example, I could see Walmart signing on Columbia jackets and Target signing on North Face in select markets.

The mainline Levi's is sold by Walmart on Walmart.com (not in physical Walmart stores). Other mid-range to sub-premium brands now sold by Walmart on Walmart.com as online exclusives include IZOD, Van Heusen, Arrow, and Lands End (all of which are also sold by Amazon), among others. I can potentially see Walmart adding Chaps (Ralph Lauren's moderately priced brand) to its brands being sold on Walmart.com.

Chaps is going to cease to exist as a fashion line and will shift towards a licensing model.

Hanes, Gildan, and Fruit of the Loom aren't fashion brands. They make necessities and white label clothing. So I don't think it makes sense to compare them to US Polo Assn.

As far as I know the Chaps brand will still exist, however, RL will no longer be responsible for the marketing and design of the line. However, RL will still own the Chaps brand and can terminate the licensing agreement at any time if quality seriously suffers.

Walmart.com seems to be no big deal, but actually having their product actually sold in physical Walmart stores seems to be a new low for the brand since it seems to devalue the brand. While the brand was usually somewhat priced below Chaps and IZOD, it was never truly low-end like store brands or Hanes/Gildan/Fruit of the Loom.
Apparently USPA's main brick and mortar outlets were Sears and JCPenney. With Sears now a shell of its former self and JCPenney closing a lot of their locations, USPA probably had no other choice (besides Target), since Kohl's already has both Chaps and IZOD.
