How much wear are you getting out of your socks before the holes start to appear? In a high friction area like the heels of shoes will inevitably become worn and thin.
Especially if your shoe doesn't cup your heel correctly. If a shoe doesn't have a deep enough heel your foot will tend to move inside the shoe with every step. So, the shoe will rub on and abrade the sock there. Agree with others: a combination of cheap socks and ill fitting shoes.
Theatergypsy---"Or...you could buy a darning egg and darn the hole(s) in your sock(s). I remember my Grandmother darning socks while listening to the radio of an evening. Most women of her generation had a basket full of socks that needed mending. "Use it up, wear it out. Make it do or do without". LOL
I'm an old geezer (tailend of the "Great Depression") and I still darn my socks. Don't have a darning egg, but, a lightbulb works too.
Wash socks after one wearing. Soiled socks wear out faster. I forgot that bit of advice in my previous post. Apparently some people wear their socks twice or thrice before washing.
Honestly, my best guess is that you should buy a better brand of sock.
This is becoming a nuisance. It's very uncomfortable when I feel the hole in my sock while in commute. Could it be the dryer that's causing it? or should I purchase better socks?
100% NYLON socks - cost a little bit more, but nearly impossible to wear a hole in these.
Walmart sells a 5-pack of black ones - most economical way to buy them.
Hmmm - but what if it's not in the toes of your socks (I give myself a full pedicure every month!)...how about the ball of your foot? Just buy "better" socks? I don't particularly like wool.

Never ever walk in just your socks. Slip your feet into slippers, or wear shoes. But as much fun as it might seem to run around on the hardwood floors in your socks, it’s very easy for them to catch on little bits of loose wood or whatever.
I can remember I was doing some knee exercises on a mat. One of which was sliding my foot up and down on my heel using a resistance band to work one of the muscles. So my heel was on the mat sliding up and down with the sock. At the end of of the second rep I had a hole in the heel on one sock. Socks need to be in shoes, or slippers.

buy tube socks.
rotate each wearing by 1/4 turn. Clockwise on the right sock. And counterclockwise on the left sock.
Do not mix up the left - right sox.
Buy only single color tube socks. At most two colors.
