I know it's a common complaint that people hate their DL photos, but doesn't that seem a little nonsensical since we're usually standing right there for the person to see in real life anyway?

It's not trivial. I'm sure it's a constant, grating annoying. Ask if they'd let you bring in a passport photo of your own, and then find a good photographer.
