What color and what do you think of this one? I'm thinking charcoal or black. Doesn't need to be a preppy look.

I also really like this one.

For some reason, the blue-green one looks like a cheap synthetic. Pro tip: ALWAYS check fabric content! You want something that's breathable (for comfort), and that looks higher-end. Something with majority natural fiber will work best. Learn where to look in the garment to find the fabric-content label.

Stay away from ”slim fit” unless you're really really scrawny.

Most guys, following the current fad for too-small clothing, end up looking like they're still trying to wear their Bar Mitzvah suit. Don't be that guy.

If you're GOING to buy cheap clothes, at least have a salesman show you how to have them fit properly, and get them altered.

I am about the most ordinary-sized chap in the United States and yet every one of my coats has to be altered; one arm's a little longer than the other and the back has to be shortened a bit to eliminate the wrinkle behind the collar.

Under no circumstances, when you button the coat, should there be any wrinkles in the material caused by pulling it across your chest and stomach.

For materials, just skip right over all the cheap-suit shiny used-car-salesman synthetic stuff. The material you want is wool. At least your first, second, and third sportcoats, blazers, and suits should be wool. When you get down into #6 or 7, that's when you start adding things like the linen jacket or suit, or the gabardine, or so on. But to start out: wool.
