It just kills me, some of the prices. I wish I could sew, or convince my mom to make these for me like she used to when I was younger! When I was 19 and had my first "office job" she made me a ton of pencil skirts and 50's style blouses and the like to wear to work since I hated what was available in the stores (even then )...
What I would recommend is getting a size to fit your bust, then taking it to a tailor and getting it tucked into your waist. It only costs $15 or so and the dresses are very well made so they'll last you a loooooong time if you take care of them. It's well worth it, believe me.

I should do that. That's another thing my mom used to do for me, when I bought dresses, because they were NEVER small enough in the waist. Man, I miss her sewing days!

I have always had a pretty drastic waist to hip ratio, even when I gain weight it remains (suppose I should be thankful my shape stays constant even if the numbers increase!)...I always had way more than the "standard" 10 inch difference. More like 12" or more. It's always been a problem for clothing fit and it's why I was SO glad when lower rise jeans became popular!

Kate Donovan is a plus size pinup/burlesque dancer and she is really proud of her size:

Don't know if she is too young for it...but Torrid has great stuff for bigger girls.

I also love the rockabilly scene. I just got into it back in february when I absolutely fell in love with a local band here that does the music. I'm trying to get more into the clothes but I don't know if I could pull off the style while at work...just outside and I don't want a dramatic change to my wardrobe just some subtlety. I've been checking out the stuff on e-bay but it's hard for me to buy dresses there b/c I am so different in every dress I try on. Are there any stores in NYC I could check out that would have things I could try on first?

This look takes time, there's no doubt, but I think it is the most flattering style on the female form and women of all sizes look beautiful in it. Several online stores cater to the retro-lady. Daddyos.com, Mybabyjo.com, and Pinupgirlclothing.com to name a few.

Most people don't even know this subculture exists. Are there any more of you out there?
it can be really sexy, but a lot of time, i see chicks like the girl from ace of cakes, that just gross me out.

Which is why I'm engaged to the same man I've been with for 6 years Most of the 'trashy' rockabilly gals I know are married and most have kids... but I guess they're indecent too.

I used to think they looked like cool people. But from what i've experienced, they tend to be elitist and if your style isn't hip enough, they will write you off immediately. They are a very cliquey group indeed. Very concerned with their image and looking "cool". They can be snobby.

I think any sub-culture is like this though. I am definantly counter-culture myself. But these really specific groups like rockabilly, psychobilly, hipster, gutter punk, etc. etc. Are just way too fashionable for me.

I'm all about pure individualism. Outside of any labels or stereotypes.

I am not into fashion at all. What am I doing here?
