Ah - I see, you don't work in a professional environment.
I work in a professional office ... a global engineering firm of 10,000+ employees whose employers don't care what's on people's feet because it has no bearing on how we do our jobs.
Now if anyone has to go out into the field, there are rules for footwear, but that's a safety issue. And I never have to go out into the field.
There is nothing I love more than watching a family coming back from a vacation running through the airport trying to make a connection in their flip flops. Entertainment at its best!

Why wear flip flops? Why not sneakers at least? Nothing to me says I'm a lazy slob than flip flops in an office.
Maybe it's just my experience that tainted the whole thing but, only the biggest losers were stuff like that to work.

I HATE sneakers. I refuse to wear them all day long.
I'm not talking about the plastic dollar store shower shoes. Mine are usually leather and embellished in some way. My flip flops are a lot nicer looking than a lot of the sneakers I see around here.
I remember back in the 90's and in centuries prior that people in the United States wore SHOES or at least something that covers the entire foot such as boots.
When 2000, and the years after, arrived I noticed that people started to wear flip flops not just to the beaches or to other swimming locations but anywhere considered informal. Daily, I have to endure simultaneously seeing the disgusting feet of some people in addition to hearing the sickening smacking sound that is made when the soles of the flip flops hit the ground and when people's foot soles smack their flip flop soles.
Do Americans actually wear flip flops informally abroad when visiting other countries? I'd hate to think what is going through the minds of the people in host countries, especially in developed countries, when they see an American(s) walking down a street while creating those annoying flip flop smacking sounds that I mentioned in the paragraph above. Yeck.
Is there someone else in this forum that agrees with me?
Annoyed? How about disgusted?
They do go along quite well with the sloppifying of our culture. Baggy saggy pants falling down, sloppy shirts, tatts all over, poor posture, poor attentiveness, eyes locked into the little device, walk as if they don't know where they're going, this civilization is not what it was 40-50 years ago.
Nope. Doesn't bother me.
And while traveling in other countries, I think the flip flops would be the least of the insults that many US Americans hoist on other cultures. Most of the time when I've been in another country the usual complaint about Americans is that they are loud and brash. Never heard anyone mention flip flops.
The idea that Americans are the only ones who wear flip flops everywhere is pure nonsense. Here in Australia, they are found all over the place during summer and even far beyond. Any warm place is bound to have them.

There's a time and place for everything. Nothing wrong with wearing them on a nice sunny day, when going out for a stroll.
I wore them constantly for 15 years or so and ruined my feet. I’ll never consider them a walking shoe again. I don’t care what other people do though, except for the people with gross feet.
I love flip flops and I will wear them every day from the day it's warm enough in the spring until the day it's too cold in the fall. It's almost like being barefoot. I don't personally like the rubber ones, but I wear $100 leather flip flops/sandals. Or just "flops" as my granddaughter calls them.
