Hi,Fabumom here,

I am considering becoming a hairstylist, make-up artist for the next phase of my life, which will be that of a working mom. I have been a costume designer and an interior designer for an expensive furniture line by commission. Both jobs have a certain amount of pressure and stress that are not the best fit with my family life. My husband works full time with benefits, so a great salary is not my main aim.

I would love opinions from those of you who have worked in the beauty salon industry, especially the real dish on how flexible your schedule can be, how quickly one can move into a good salon if you are talented, and overall feedback on the working environment.
Also, how are women in the "older "age brackets viewed when they are first starting out? I am just 40, look a bit younger , but wonder how annoyed I will get with catty younger women at this point in my life. I don't mean to typecast anyone, but have noticed gossipy, immature behavior at many salons. Is this to be expected?

Thank you in advance for anyone who shares their thoughts and experiences.

I was a cosmotologist a few years back. I have since let my license expire and it was the biggest mistake ever. I will be going back to get my license back... That said...

You can get hired into a great salon but you will usually have to climb the ladder...starting at the shampoo bowl, maybe moving up to assisting, then to cutting, then to coloring...As an assistant you will apply color, remove perm rods, apply treatments ect ect...

Or you can start in a salon with a large and fast moving customer base. A lot of walk in business...Build your clientele and then move into the nice salon as an experienced hairdresser and bring your people with you.

As far as your schedule goes, where ever I have worked, I was able to set my schedule...Monday are usually off days for hairdressers while Saturdays are the big days to work.

When it comes to the catty younger girls...well that is going to happen...But a lot of salons do have an 'older' (more experienced) group of hairdressers right along with the younger ones...the older ladies usually rock the business because the younger girls are ... young and usually inexperienced... It never really bothered me much. I just minded my own business and did my own thing...and made more money. Got involved when I felt the need and didn't when I had no interest.

I love doing hair. It is a fun job. It is not a huge money making job in the begining but once your established you really can do well. It will be what you make of it...

Thanks, Danielle
As you can see from the type error in my heading, data entry is not an option! Thanks for your well thought response.
