The first thing I used to do with a new leather object was to condition and polish it.
scuff: To scrape and roughen the surface of.
I guess when I got leather all of it was cheap because it all scuffed. There is texture under the smooth surface. I thought that is where suede came from.
I don't know how you'd avoid it. Scratch a pin over it. Everything I had would have scuffed.
