if high heel shoes and platform shoes are so bad for the feet then why do you feel the need to buy and wear them? Oprah is famous for buying beautiful high heels but taking them off on stage because of how painful they are. Why? Why put yourself through that kind of pain? Doesn't the origin of such shoes goes back to the old tradition of women having small feet? I remember photos of asian women whose feet were broken and crushed to make them look small. I'm glad my wife doesn't wear such shoes. She didn't even wear heels for our wedding.
I think Sailordave is out of touch... something is very amiss in his life to ask that kind of question...
To answer your question.. most women do things to please the opposite sex.. those shoes in question.. look sexy and make the women feel sexy... anymore questions? Ladies feel free to chime in.. but I think I pretty much answered it
I have a podiatrist (spelling?) I see regularly for my fallen arch on my right foot. I've spoken with him about shoes and he's said he wishes he could go back in time to find the person who decided that was proper footware and stop him from doing so. Only good thing about high heels is the money they provide podiatrist, orthopedic surgeons, and various back pain specialist. He recommended New Balance shoes because they come in such a wide variety of sizes, widths, and support. One day I took my wife to an authorized New Balance dealer, an authorized dealer sells the models you can't find at other stores. Though the shoes cost about $100, they felt fantastic and provided some relief for my wife's back pain.

If you take a look at the topic about the ideal height of a woman, you'll see that most people like women on the taller side. That is one reason.
Another reason is that it makes your legs look longer which is also proven to be found attractive by most people (though if you knew the theory on why we find it attractive you might be put off - apparently, longer legs is a sign of youth, particular during or before the time of puberty when the legs are often long).
The third reason is that it forces a posture that most people also find attractive. Basically, it kind of makes your butt stick out a bit more than normal.
It has nothing to do with small feet. You are confusing Chinese foot binding with high heels. They have nothing to do with one another. Foot binding is no longer practised and wasn't really fashionable outside Asia anyway. When women wear heels, they buy the right size for their foot!
I only buy heels I find comfortable to begin with and don't wear them often or stand for endless amount of times in them. Oddly enough, some of my heels are less painful than some of my flats. I have very wide feet and high arches - flats tend to have not enough arch support and most that I find to fit my feet tend to have a very masculine or "earth mama" kind of look to them. Not generally what I'm looking for. Most women I know wear a variety of shoes for a variety of reasons. I think actually we're better off than my mom's day when women pretty much only wore those awful pointy-toed pumps whenever they left the house (June Cleaver apparently wore them even to vacuum in!)......
