I've never been a fan of really long nails. I keep mine as short as possible, a habit I picked up while doing martial arts. Those super long, fake, acrylic things are just nasty and trashy looking.
My nails generally stay short because I do so much yard work. But when I am eating right, taking vitamins, and getting to the beach regularly (yes...this makes a difference - not sure why but it always has!), my nails always grow out quickly. I tend to take advantage of that (like now) and give myself a nice manicure. But I do like to keep them no longer than 1/4" or so. Anymore is just too hard to *do* stuff, including typing (and I work on a computer all day).
I've always seen long (esp fake) nails as a hygiene issue as well. I simply don't get the appeal.
I remember when I was in college I worked as a supervisor at a chain type restaurant and one of the waitresses lost her fake nail in a vat of bean soup. Ever since then even the thought of acrylic nails gives me willies...
I've never repped so many posters in one thread! LMAO on this one...A+++ for entertainment value! I grow my nails just a little over the nail bed...only enough to be able to peel off stickers, labels, pick up a small eyeglass screw, and such. I've had acrylic nails done once in my life (at my wedding) and the entire week after, I kept playing with it as it felt so unnatural to me. I do a lot of housework with my hands and find that if I don't put even a coat of polish on it (clear), it tends to break and chip more.
Keep the posts coming! You gals are sooooooo funny!
And yes, long toenails are second to none in the GROSS category! Ick! Yuck!
I can tell you that a vast majority ogf guys could care less about long fingernails. I have never even heard a guy comment on a woman's fingernails - and I am a guy. Never have I heard a guy say "Wow, look at the fingernails on that one"...

This is spot on. The guy I'm dating right now said exactly the same thing. He said guys pay no attention to them - polish or no polish. As long as they are clean - they don't matter a whit.
I cut my nails back every couple of months because I hate when I'm typing and they 'click'. I have no idea why someone would want nails so long that they could cause themselves injury if they pick their nose.
I don't know anyone nowadays that has long nails. I think I saw some young girl at McDonald's a couple of years ago with dragon lady nails, but nowhere else. I've never had long nails, myself.
Maybe I've seen a few women who work at hair salons with them, but nowhere else. All the women I've worked with in offices even if they weren't secretaries have never had long nails. A lot of women garden, clean their own houses, type on computers so those long nails get in the way.
I remember seeing photos of Madonna sometime in the nineties, and I think she was one of the first to get rid of the long nails. But her nails still looked "done."
Long nails, not me. Mine are short and functional. And why would anyone want to glue acrylic pieces to their finger tips to have them filed? Might be a good weapon but nothing else. There are nail salons popping up everywhere! Even young girls are getting their nails done. Too much maintenance and time required. I do not even like to take the time to get a hair cut.
It is much easier to clean and maintain short hair,
I respectfully disagree.
It is MUCH easier IMO, to maintain longer hair than shorter hair. whne my hair was short, it was always in the way; took MUCH longer to even make presentable, and took even longer to style. With longer hair (mind you, mine is almost butt crack length), I can throw it into a bun in 3 seconds flat, or braid it for the day, ponytail, or a more elegant upsweep.
Seriously, it takes me less time and effort to make my super long hair acceptable, than it ever did with short hair.
But then again, YMMV; I just know short hair is NOT for me and was more of a pain than it was worth.
