Do my shoes have to match the color in my skirt or can I match them to the top? Does it matter?

It doesn't matter. At one time, the shoes were to be the color of your hemline or darker. Now, a shoe that is your skin color seems to extend the length of your leg. I say wear whatever color you want.

I've noticed that too. It's a great excuse to buy some nude or taupe pumps or sandals this year.

I'm also a fan of metallics for evening wear.

Mostly, have fun. Buy something that suits your style and fits you to a T. Pair with your best smile and you are good to go!

In ballroom dance we wear shoes that are nude or flesh colored for that very reason - they make our legs look longer.

Your shoes don't have to match, they just have to "go" with the outfit. The color may match an element of your clothes, or they may complement it without matching anything. Being matchy matchy looks stale though, IMO.
