So today I realized that I have way too many pinstriped shirts and not enough solids, checkers and others. Perhaps I look better in pinstripes because of my body and complexion.
What's a good rule behind this? Is too many pinstripes bad? Is it okay to wear a pinstripe shirt with pinstripe pants of any sort? Can someone recommend a guide? Please help.
You should have a few light Blue , maybe a yellow , can't have too many white , the window pane check in blue and yellow, IMO it depends on what part of the country you are in and your profession. I used to travel for work and found some parts of the US seems almost anti- shirt and tie for some professions.

I am not sure how ultra trendy you are but you can get a ball park ideal of fall fashion for 09 from GQ Mag. There are pinstripe shirts with pinstripe suites and lots of plaids with and without ties.
I think its best not to mix stripes because it can be a hard thing to pull off. It can end up looking cluttered and tacky or just off.
I think they have been releasing a lot of striped clothing....there is a ton of pinstripes in my house as well. LOL
But for a simple guide: Stripes can make you look thinner/taller. Smaller checks/plaids are more universally flattering. Pick a darker solid neutral color for the pants for that classic look. It stretches your pants closet too so that you can wear the same pants more often without it being obvious. If you are top heavy make sure your stripes are not tight or horizontal. Its just not flattering.
Keep your shirt/pant color about 2 shades of difference in darkness. (Unless you go with the classic linen or crisp white shirt with dark pants.)
I would not say its bad to have lots of stripes if you love them! They have been coming out with so many nice ones lately too.
I would be more interested in the cut of the shirt, I remember when a clothier told me he could never see Navy and Kelly green together, It's pretty common even traditional now, I think men's fashion (outside of the Finance and Politics professions ) is loosening up a lot.
Are you talking dress shirts and ties? Never wear the same pattern on each. Checked shirt gets a striped tie. Striped shirt gets a checked tie. Never were striped on striped or the same pattern on top of each other.
ETA..if you're talking about pants and shirt. One with a pattern (stripes/checks) and the other plain.
