The shorts weren't very flattering to her figure, but it doesn't upset me. I don't expect our First Lady to be perfectly dressed all of the time. And I don't expect her to set any fashion trends either.

I thought the shorts were fine. She should wear what she feels comfortable in, and not worry what others think about it. Truthfully, I don't think she worries about it.

She was a young preacher's wife and actually have the nerve to wear shorts while shopping downtown! In in middle of summer too!

There were people that actually went to the church committee and complained about it! It almost cost my father the pulpit. Thank God cooler heads prevailed!

People who worry about this nonsense really need to get a life of their own so they can leave other people's lives alone.
Or at least shut up.

lol at this story!

In the very small, Conservative, Southern Baptist Texas town where I grew up my mother caused a similar stir. Well, she was a bit more scandalous (this was the late 70's).... because she mowed the front lawn in shorts and a halter top. (in the hot Texas summer)

I'm not sure if it was the halter or the fact that she was (GASP!) a divorced woman forced to mow her own lawn that was more upsetting, but I tell you, I identified from a young age with that "Harper Valley PTA" song.

She also shocked teachers and administration in elementary school in her own (even smaller) Texas town by wearing pants UNDER her dress in winter, when the school mandated that all girls had to wear dresses (in the late 40's).

fierce, proud to come from a LONG line of "scandalous" women....

Her shorts aren't too short at all...any longer and they would not have been flattering on her. She's in good shape...she should flaunt it!

I have always felt that shorts are always inappropriate attire when you're anywhere in public. Unless, perhaps, you're swimming at a public beach or pool. Such things are fine for around the house or in your backyard though.

She wasn't wearing shorts to a state dinner. She was wearing shorts on a family outing to the Grand Canyon. I think her oufit was totally appropriate for the occasion.

Like I said, not appropriate in public. Appropriate for around the house.

Something formal would require some other sort of attire, and I get the shivers just thinking about what kind of attire that would require. No monkey suits for me.
