I grew up in NYC, but my grandmother was raised in the south. The rule for us was no white after Labor Day, but that applied to dresses, and pants, not necessarily shoes. In elementary school, we had assembly that required girls to wear a white blouse and a blue pleated skirt. My grandmother allowed me to wear white shoes with that.
I still adhere to that; no white pants, skirts, or dresses, and I personally wouldn't do white shoes either. I have a fashionable white leather coat that I wear in fall and winter, and I've seen other white winter jackets sold, so I don't think those apply to the rule.
The rule as I knew it pertained to attire, not just footwear.
I always thought it was a bit silly, myself. Have seen the rules broken in recent years with the introduction of Optic White parkas and boots. Not winter white...not cream. WHITE.
I wear white year-round. Thankfully we don't have these rules in LA.
We don't have these rules on the East Coast, either! I don't know about the Mid-West though; maybe they apply there? I do change my summer wardrobe for a more fall/winter appropriate one when the weather necessitates. I adore the change of seasons, and the clothes that go along with it. Mostly, this means bringing out the fine leather boots and wool scarves. But no, neither I nor anyone I know puts away their white items after Labor Day. That "rule" is very outdated. If some people need to adhere to that for whatever reason, fine, more winter white for me! I love it and it suits me right down to the ground.
At forty-eight, I do remember these fashion "rules, myself, but I have no patience for them. These fashion gurus on tv would be appalled, and horrified at my clothing choices, but then, I don't dress to please anyone else. Jeans are the staple of my wardrobe.
I figure as long as I am neat, clean, and reasonbly modest, that's good enough. I have better things to do with my time. Nothing on the the ladies who do worry about that sort of thing. There's nothing wrong with that. I just have no interest in trying to maintain a correct wardrobe, whatever that may be. I don't care if other people approve of my unfashionable clothing, or not. and my cats, dogs, and horse could care less whether I wear white after Labor Day!
Just to clarify - winter white is gorgeous in the winter - and I think the name "winter white" says it all. I have several winter white outfits, the only problem is they show dirt quicker and that means more dry cleaning. Love 'em, though.
The "rule" is no white between Labor Day and Memorial Day (or Easter depending on what you were taught)....in other words, white is a color to be worn in the summertime....and those are guidelines for convenience
I know it is different now, but I still cannot wear white shoes after September 1 until Easter. How about you?
I have two pair of white Reef flip flops. I just wore them yesterday. I don't give a flip (or a flop) about that silly old rule.
