Don't worry about what the fashion police say--you won't get arrested for it. They may laugh, but if you feel comfortable, and you can get away with it at work, then by all means, do so. It doesn't get cold enough here to wear them for any sort of extended period here in Florida, so I don't own any.
When you're my age and have been married for 14 years it's OK to let yourself go in the apparel department. Priorities go to health issues and trying to keep from dieing too soon because of being too concerned about looks and ignoring healthy eating and exercising enough. Sweats are comfortable and dressing nice is somewhat expensive and good looking clothes seem to pinch a bit here and there sometimes.
Nice clothes would be a waste of good fabric on a frumpy old duffer like me.
I think they look bad when worn in public on any adult, male or female, unless they are actually jogging or otherwise engaged in some kind of fitness activity/sport. You can find cargo pants with an elastic waist that are just as comfortable and don't look as tacky as sweats.

I guess that's an individual choice. I on the other hand always try to look good for my wife. As a matter of fact, she has told me she likes when I dress comfortably as much as when I dress up to go out or to work, etc. She's the inspiration for me losing the weight I have over the past year and a half (65 lbs) to date, she's the inspiration for me starting to run in races. I think every facet of your life is enhanced when you look good for your partner.
