I'm really ambivalent about Burberrys check pattern. On some things it looks good, but other times, it looks tacky and overdone. What do you think about it (both guys + gals can answer)? What do you think about their quality in general? I was thinking about buying a couple of shirts from them, but they are very expensive, so is Burberry significantly better than Polo Ralph Lauren or similar brands in quality to justify the expense, or what do you think?

Technically, it's a Tartan:

Scottish tartans-Scotland clans heritage from Scotland On Line

I personally like that it is a classic, and recognizable, look. Just be sure that you don't buy a knock-off.

It is not, however, my favorite pattern.

I prefer these:

I haven't bought anything Burberry in years, so I really cannot comment on their quality currently.

post #3: ahh yes, my bad. I've heard it called "check" which is why I got confused, but I'd wager that you're correct.

Others: are the dudes in the pictures "chavs"? I've never heard that term, perhaps because I'm on the west coast where we rarely have guidos.

But I'm not looking at buying something that busy with the check crap. I was looking at these two items:

here

here

So are things like that non-"chav"? Otherwise, since I want to buy a slightly nicer shirt/tie than normal, what are some other brands that are similar to burberry in price and style? I like Burberry a lot because it has that classic style (when they don't tartan out everything) that I like in clothes, and its actually moderately affordable as compared to many of the Italian houses (like Armani Collezioni/Emporio...forget about higher Armani stuff), so any ideas?

I liked the pattern when it was tastefully used in a jacket lining or scarf. But the "Bling-tastic" tartan hats, sweaters, etc that scream 'Look at me I'm wearing designer clothes!!' are for the birds

We have the Cabazon Outlets here on the way to the desert and when you go there, every other Asian tourist is wearing some blingy Burberry thing. It's just old and overdone and unimaginative. I'm over it already.

I like it as a scarf and maybe a skirt, but anything else kinda looks tacky.
