The thing I love about Buckle is that it combines different designer and styles, and people in their 30s can wear a lot of the stuff without looking out of place.
J Jill is fine for someone in her 30s and 40s who wants simple clothes in neutral colors. What's wrong with a pair of chinos and a cardigan? It's better than a pink track suit with something written across the butt.
Beyond obvious teen or twenties clothing, I don't think there should be any hard and fast rules for older age groups/ or moms. If a 65+ yr old wants to be stylish she shouldn't be limited to dowdy "old lady" styles, just as 30s, 40s and 50s should have more choices. My issue has been comfort - the clothes are either too tight and clingy vs. baggy and shapeless (I am petite). How about fitted but with room to breathe and move?
My mother is in her 50s yet dresses how I think you're trying to look for. She lives in a small city and LOVES New York & Co., Ann Taylor Loft, and sometimes Express.
I think the trick is to really evaluate yourself and not go shapeless before your time OR look like you are trying too hard to be young.
Love it..."shapeless befoe your time". Definitely not. But again, not trying to go back in time to the teen/20 something angst years. To look good without car payment-esque clothes is the goal.
I didn't know there was a grown up version of American Eagle, gonna check that out as well as Buckle. Just got a new Boden catalog in the mail today. I do like them, a bit pricey, we'll see.
They do have clothes for grandma's, and older moms and women, but also they have clothes for women our age as well who don't want to dress like our moms. They also have a great selection of petites clothing. And their color palette changes seasonally... recently I went in there and everything was lavender and purple... kind of surprising! Sometimes you go in and it's all beige and whites and browns... you just never know until they bring the new stuff out.
I have a hard time finding clothing that I really like, too. I like a lot of J.Jill's clothes, but not their pants, they are too baggy on me, even the slim-fits. I tend to shop at Ann Taylor, Lands End, LLBean, JJill, Lord & Taylor, Macy's, and sometimes JCPenney (for Levi's) or Kohl's. I don't like buying clothes online, because more often than not I have to return them.
Have you tried the petite sizes in J.Jill? When I first tried on their jeans and capri pants, I had the baggy problem... then the saleslady (who I love and who knows me by name now! No joke!) told me to try on a petite size, and they fit just right! I was surprised because I'm an average sized person - 5'6" around 130lbs and blessed in the boob dept... yet the petite sizes fit me perfectly at J.Jill... whatever works!
I like J.Crew. It's a bit more but worth it. Jeans/Jackets look, feel so soft. Fit so nice. Kohl's is reasonable. Macys-In the mall but nice stuff.
