This practice has been in use for many years. They used to just 'tack' the pockets in one place, so that they lay smoother on the rack and during fitting. Now it is just as fast to use a loose stitch always across the pocket opening.
You are supposed to remove this temporary stitching. Usually you don't need scissors--they don't backstitch or tie off the end, the thread is just loose and you can usually pull it out with your fingers.
The ones I was referring to were in the seventies. It was actually sewn tight with maybe only 1 or 2 inch of material under the stitching, Ussually on tight fitting pants. Not enough material to actually function as a pocket. It was not tacked. I have only come across the tacking in blazer pockets.
that just happened to me a few months ago with some pants i bought for work. i had to cut open my back pockets. id never heard of such a thing! ridiculous.
Is this completely absurd? What am I missing here? I've bought more than one pair of pants where I had to cut open the pockets. Why do they sew them shut? It's like getting a salad with huge chunks you have to cut up before you can eat it.
It is to discourage you from playing pocket pool. Just kidding. Pockets are sewn shut to the garment would lose it's shape.

Seriously, how do people reach adulthood and not know this?
Hard to imagine someone that has no events in their life for which they would dress in other than jeans. That's pretty awful.
